Multigenerational Living, Elevated: Designing Luxury Spaces for Every Stage of Life
The concept of family is constantly shifting and expanding. As are societal norms about generations living together. Whether it’s due to economic reasons, health reasons, or simply because families want to spend more time together, it’s a clear trend. As more and more households embrace multigenerational living arrangements, the need for homes that can accommodate multigenerational living has never been greater. At Studio Garrison, we are at the forefront of this movement. We identify how existing homes can be modified. Then we create spaces that are both functional for multiple families, but also that are truly luxurious.
"Multigenerational living presents unique design challenges. But it's also an incredible opportunity to craft environments that foster connection and harmony," says Principal Garrison Hullinger. "Our approach is to create spaces that not only meet the functional needs of each generation but also provide a sense of privacy and independence when desired."
One of the key principles that guides our work in this realm is the concept of "zoning." By thoughtfully delineating private and communal areas within the home, we're able to create a sense of flow and separation. This allows families to come together seamlessly while still maintaining their own personal spaces.
For one of our projects in Ridgefield, Washington, our team designed a stunning multi-generational home that exemplified this philosophy. The main living areas, including the great room, kitchen, and outdoor entertaining spaces, were designed to foster connection and togetherness, with ample seating and gathering spots for the entire family.
However, it's not just about defining space. It's also about designing with accessibility and adaptability in mind. As families grow and evolve, their living spaces must be able to accommodate changing needs and requirements. No amount of aesthetic interior design can justify a space that doesn’t function for all the home’s inhabitants.
In another custom home project in Lake Oswego, Oregon, our team incorporated a variety of innovative design elements. We used these to ensure that the home could seamlessly adapt to the needs of aging family members. We added wider doorways and smooth flooring transitions as well as strategically placed elevators and wheelchair-accessible features. Every aspect of the design was carefully considered to promote independence and ease of movement, while still retaining extreme luxury.
At Studio Garrison, we take immense pride in our ability to design multigenerational living spaces that transcend mere functionality. We combine our expertise in luxury design with a deep understanding of the unique dynamics and needs of modern families. By doing this, we're able to create homes that not only accommodate but truly celebrate every stage of life. No one should feel like their home is working against them!
