Rendering of custom home showcasing modern details.

In the realm of custom home design, true mastery lies in creating spaces that not only cater to the unique needs and desires of homeowners but also harmonize seamlessly with their natural surroundings. At Studio Garrison, we pride ourselves on crafting bespoke living environments that elevate the concept of luxury while paying homage to the landscape that cradles them. Our latest project is a contemporary haven nestled in the rolling prairie hills with breathtaking views of the Cascade Mountains. It stands as a testament to this philosophy.

Join us as we take you on a journey through the creation of this exceptional custom home, where innovative design and the grandeur of nature work hand-in-hand. From the awe-inspiring floating staircase to the thoughtful integration of natural materials, every element has been meticulously chosen to create a family retreat that celebrates both its prairie setting and mountain vistas. Let's explore how our team of expert designers has redefined modern comfort while framing the beauty of the natural world.

Site Analysis and Inspiration

Our journey began with a thorough analysis of the property's unique location. Situated amidst gently rolling prairie hills, the site offered an unparalleled canvas for architectural creativity. The most striking feature, however, was the panoramic view of the majestic Cascade Mountains in the distance – a view that would become the focal point of our design strategy. No matter what, that vista had to be highlighted.

The natural landscape served as both inspiration and challenge. How could we create a modern, luxurious home that wouldn't overshadow the raw beauty of its surroundings? This question guided every decision in our design process, from the overall structure to the smallest decorative details.

We spent considerable time observing how light moved across the property throughout the day and studying the local flora. These observations informed our choices of materials, window placements, and even the home's orientation on the site. Our goal was to create a structure that would feel as if it had grown organically from the prairie itself while offering all the comforts of contemporary living.

Architectural Concept and Design Philosophy

At the heart of this project was a commitment to blending contemporary luxury with the natural surroundings. We envisioned a home that would serve as a bridge between the cultivated comfort of interior spaces and the wild beauty of the prairie and mountains beyond. How do you make a home stand out, while not looking like it doesn’t belong?

Our design philosophy centered on creating harmony between indoor and outdoor spaces. Large, strategically placed windows and sliding glass doors blur the lines between interior and exterior, allowing the breathtaking landscape to become an integral part of the home's ambiance. The result is a living experience that constantly connects the inhabitants with nature, even when they're indoors.

In our design approach, we deliberately departed from traditional prairie architecture elements like low-pitched rooflines and overhanging eaves. Instead, we opted for a bold, contemporary aesthetic characterized by flat, modern rooflines and crisp, 90-degree corners. This striking silhouette creates a powerful juxtaposition against the rolling landscape, while still maintaining a strong horizontal emphasis that pays homage to the prairie's vast expanse. In essence, the home is wider than it is tall, much like the rolling hills that surround it. By reinterpreting regional architectural cues through a decidedly modern lens, we've created a home that feels both audacious and timeless. The result is a structure that stands as a testament to forward-thinking design while remaining intimately connected to its unique location.

Exterior Design Elements

A selection of exterior building materials.

The exterior of this custom home is a study in understated elegance. We chose building materials that complement the landscape, including stone, warm-toned wood, and expanses of glass. The stone grounds the structure, visually anchoring it to the site, while the wood adds warmth and texture. Large glass panels serve a dual purpose. They flood the interior with natural light and frame the mountain views like living works of art.

The home's silhouette makes a bold, contemporary statement while maintaining a strong horizontal emphasis that echoes the prairie's expansive lines. A series of interconnected volumes with varying heights create visual interest and dynamic spatial relationships. Flat roofs with crisp edges and no overhangs define the structure's modern aesthetic, offering a striking contrast to the rolling landscape. This architectural approach results in a home that is unabashedly contemporary yet harmoniously integrated with its natural surroundings.

One of the most striking exterior features is a cantilevered section that seems to float above the ground, offering unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. This architectural element not only adds drama to the design but also minimizes the home's footprint on the land.

Interior Layout and Flow

Inside, the custom home unfolds as a series of open, flowing spaces designed to maximize both functionality and views. The open floor plan concept allows for seamless movement between living areas, dining spaces, and the kitchen, creating an ideal environment for both family life and entertaining

Central to the design is the strategic placement of windows and glass doors. Each room has been carefully oriented to capture the best views. Whether it's the distant mountains, the surrounding prairie, or intimate garden spaces, everything is visible. This constant visual connection to the outdoors enhances the sense of spaciousness and brings nature into every corner of the home.

Natural light plays a crucial role in the interior design. Skylights and clerestory windows complement the larger glass expanses, ensuring that even on overcast days, the home remains bright and welcoming. The interplay of light and shadow throughout the day adds depth and character to the interior spaces. They create an ever-changing ambiance that reflects the rhythms of nature.

Standout Design Features

While every aspect of this custom home has been thoughtfully designed, certain features stand out as true showstoppers. Chief among these is the floating staircase – a sculptural element that serves as both a functional necessity and a work of art.

The staircase appears to defy gravity, with treads of warm wood seemingly suspended in air. Glass balustrades maintain the open feel while ensuring safety. More than just a means of vertical circulation, this staircase is a focal point that embodies the home's blend of elegance and innovation.

Throughout the home, we've incorporated a harmonious mix of natural materials. Stone floors in high-traffic areas provide durability and a connection to the earth. Wood paneling and built-ins add warmth and texture. Metal accents in matte finishes offer contemporary sophistication without overwhelming the natural elements.

In the kitchen, a massive island topped with book-matched stone serves as both a functional workspace and a gathering spot for family and friends. The veining in the stone echoes the lines of the distant mountains, subtly reinforcing the connection between interior and exterior.

Outdoor Living Spaces

The integration of indoor and outdoor living is a key feature of this custom home. Expansive decks and terraces extend the living space into the landscape, providing numerous opportunities for outdoor relaxation and entertainment.

A covered outdoor kitchen and dining area allow for al fresco meals with a backdrop of mountain views. A sunken fire pit area, surrounded by comfortable seating, offers a cozy spot for evening gatherings under the stars.

The landscaping has been carefully designed to enhance the prairie setting while providing privacy and defining outdoor rooms. Grasses and wildflowers native to the region create a low-maintenance, naturalistic garden that attracts local wildlife and changes with the seasons.

Customization and Client Collaboration

At every stage of the design process, close collaboration with our clients was key. We wanted to ensure that the final custom home not only met but exceeded their expectations. Regular meetings and presentations allowed us to refine the design based on their feedback. We also incorporated personal touches that make the home uniquely theirs. It was only possible to do this because of our frequent and detailed communication.

For example, a dedicated music room was designed to showcase the clients' grand piano and provide optimal acoustics for both practice and small performances. In the master suite, a private terrace was added to create a secluded outdoor retreat with unobstructed mountain views.

The clients' book collection also played a role in shaping the interior spaces. We designed specific areas to highlight key books, ensuring that the architecture serves as a complementary backdrop to their curated collection.

Challenges and Solutions

As with any complex design project, we encountered challenges along the way. The site's remote location presented logistical hurdles in terms of construction and material delivery. We overcame this by carefully scheduling deliveries and working closely with local contractors familiar with the area's unique conditions.

The desire to maximize views was a key goal. However, maintaining energy efficiency required innovative solutions. We employed sun studies and carefully calculated the sun's path across the house throughout the year. Through this, we balanced solar heat gain and heat loss. As a result, the home remains comfortable year-round while still offering panoramic vistas.

Integrating modern technology with the natural aesthetic posed another challenge. We concealed wiring and systems within walls and custom cabinetry. This ensures that the smart home features enhance rather than detract from the overall design.

Construction Process Highlights

When planning their dream home, the family knew they needed an experienced team they could trust. They partnered with a reputable general contractor who had extensive expertise in managing complex residential builds.

The result of this collaborative effort was a beautiful, high-performance home that fulfilled the family's vision. By working closely with a trusted contractor and assembled specialists, they were able to successfully navigate the challenges of a build of this scale and complexity.
