From Snowy Trails to Sophisticated Interiors: How Studio Garrison Designed the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley East

The creation of the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley East Hotel and Private Residences began with an intimate exploration of the land. In the early days of site work, Garrison Hullinger, founder of Studio Garrison, embarked on a snowmobiling expedition through the pristine Wasatch Mountains. This immersive day in the snow was not just about experiencing the terrain, but also about connecting deeply with the natural beauty of the setting. The rugged wilderness, the tranquil Jordanelle Lake, and the awe-inspiring mountain vistas became the foundation for the design’s narrative. It’s a story of harmony between nature and refined luxury.

Studio Garrison’s design process was equally rooted in collaboration and craftsmanship. Numerous trips to New York City facilitated close work with the developer and their team where every finish, material, and texture was meticulously selected to bring the Grand Hyatt to life. These meetings were guided by a shared commitment to crafting spaces that resonate with both the grandeur of the natural landscape and the warmth of human connection.

The interplay between rugged mountain beauty and sophisticated living was the primary inspiration for the interior design of the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley East Hotel. Studio Garrison embraced the philosophy of "tailored rusticity," blending natural materials like stone and wood with sleek, contemporary elements. This fusion creates a seamless balance of modern elegance and timeless charm. Every detail, from the bespoke furnishings to the subtle textures, was thoughtfully chosen to reflect the region’s spirit while offering guests a sense of comfort and escape.

A Design Rooted in Experience and Intention

The Lobby as a Gateway: Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a lobby that frames the breathtaking mountain vistas through floor-to-ceiling windows. The design invites the outdoors in, with intimate seating arrangements that encourage gathering and conversation. Food and beverage service in this space becomes a curated experience, enhanced by custom-designed furniture that complements the serene backdrop.

  • Guest Rooms and Suites: The color palette features rich tones of metals that pay homage to the mineral mining history of the site, accented by brilliant blues that draw inspiration from the depths of Jordanelle Lake. This combination creates a luxurious yet grounded atmosphere, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the natural beauty surrounding them.

  • Conference Center: The palette in the conference center embraces soft neutrals, complemented by artful carpet designs that evoke the imagery of streams of gold and silver flowing through the spaces. This thoughtful design enhances the environment, promoting a sense of calm and elegance conducive to productivity and collaboration.

  • Dining Spaces and Bars: Each dining space and bar offers a unique sense of character, providing visitors with an experience that mirrors the richness of the textures and a mix of dark, cozy finishes. The warm ambiance and intricate details create inviting settings. This ensures that every meal feels like a special occasion, steeped in comfort and sophistication.

A Journey in Design

The journey to create the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley East Hotel was as intentional as the hotel itself. Garrison Hullinger’s time on the mountain provided a visceral understanding of the land, shaping the design at its core. The collaborative trips to New York refined the vision. They guaranteed that every element of the interior design was a bespoke reflection of the property’s identity. From the tactile richness of the materials to the careful arrangement of spaces, Studio Garrison crafted an environment where the interior design is not just a backdrop but an integral part of the guest experience.
